Crossing Life's Rivers: Embracing Change with Faith and Gratitude

There are moments in life when you find yourself standing on the edge of a river. Behind you lies everything God has brought you through. Ahead of you is everything God has promised. This image has stayed with me deeply, especially as I reflect on our final Sunday at Ōmāpere Community Church in the Hokianga. Like Jacob crossing the Jabbok River in Genesis 32, we faced a transition that was both challenging and full of hope.
Wrestling with Change and Finding Transformation
Jacob’s story is powerful because it shows that transformation often comes through struggle. He crossed the river one way and returned another. He entered the darkness as Jacob but walked away as Israel. He left with a limp, a visible reminder of the wrestling he endured, but also with a blessing that assured him his future was not built on his own strength but on God’s faithfulness.
In my own journey with this church family, I have seen this truth lived out. Change is never easy. Leaving a place where you have shared prayers, meals, laughter, tears, and countless moments of life together feels like stepping into the unknown. Yet, it is in these moments of wrestling that faith grows deeper.
For those of us living in NZ, especially in communities like the Hokianga, faith is not just a Sunday practice. It is woven into the fabric of daily life. It shapes how we face challenges, how we celebrate joys, and how we support one another. Like Jacob, we learn that God meets us in the wrestling and leads us forward with a new identity and purpose.
Gratitude for the Journey Shared
Reflecting on our time at Ōmāpere Community Church fills my heart with gratitude. Serving alongside this community has been a privilege beyond words. From conversations around kitchen tables to hospital visits, from Bible studies to movie nights, every moment has been a thread in the story of God’s work among us.
I am thankful for the kindness and generosity shown by this church family. Their encouragement and friendship have been a source of strength. It has been a joy not only to open God’s Word each week but also to know people deeply, to pray with them, and to share life’s ups and downs.
This gratitude extends beyond the church walls. The Hokianga has become home, a place where faith and community intersect in meaningful ways. Though this chapter closes, the relationships and memories remain. We will continue to pray for this church and trust God for all He has planned next.
Embracing the Future with Faith
Standing on the edge of change can feel uncertain. But the story of Jacob reminds us that God’s promises are sure. Our future is not built on our own strength but on His faithfulness. This truth gives courage to step forward, even when the path is unclear.
For anyone facing a similar transition, whether in NZ or elsewhere, the message is the same: God meets us in the struggle, transforms us through it, and leads us into a future filled with hope. Faith is the anchor that holds us steady when life’s rivers rise.
As we move forward, I encourage you to hold onto this truth. Trust God’s faithfulness. Embrace the changes with gratitude for the journey so far. And look ahead with confidence that God’s promises will carry you through.
Our time in the Hokianga has been a chapter marked by growth, connection, and deepening faith. The rivers we cross in life are not just obstacles but places where God reveals His presence and power. May we all find strength in our own journeys, knowing that faith and gratitude light the way forward.
