“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.” — Matthew 5:7, ESV

Mercy is one of those words we often associate with weakness. In our world, mercy can look like letting someone “off the hook,” or not getting even when we have the right to. But in the kingdom of God, mercy is strength. Mercy is love in action.

To be merciful means we see the hurt of others and step toward them instead of away. It means we forgive when it would be easier to hold a grudge. It means we remember how God has treated us—with undeserved compassion—and let that overflow into how we treat others.

Brant Hansen, in his book Unoffendable, puts it this way: “Mercy isn’t optional for the forgiven. It’s who we are now.”

When we extend mercy, we reflect the heart of Christ. And here’s the promise—Jesus says the merciful will receive mercy. Not because we earn God’s favor, but because when we live mercifully, we’re living in step with Him. The more we give mercy, the more we recognize how much we’ve already received.

This week, ask yourself:

  • Who in my life needs compassion more than criticism?

  • Where is God inviting me to extend forgiveness instead of revenge?

  • How can I show mercy in small, practical ways today?

The mercy we give becomes the mercy we live in. And that’s where blessing is found.
