The Hokianga Prayer Beads: A Journey of Surrender, Scripture, Listening, and Abiding in Christ

In a world filled with noise, distraction, and constant demands for our attention, many followers of Jesus long for something deeper — a way to slow down, quiet their hearts, and become more aware of God’s presence.
Prayer is not simply about saying the right words. It is about relationship. It is about coming before our Father, surrendering our hearts, listening for His voice, and abiding in Christ.
The Hokianga Prayer Beads were created as a simple tool to guide believers through a meaningful journey of prayer — not placing faith in the beads themselves, but using them as a physical reminder to focus our hearts on Jesus.

Each bead represents a movement of prayer: surrender, union with Christ, love for God, the Shepherd’s care, intercession, cleansing, revelation, thanksgiving, and rest.
As we move through the beads, we are invited to move deeper into the presence of God.
Beginning at the Cross: Surrendering Everything to God
The journey begins at the cross. We start with the words:
“In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”
This reminds us that prayer begins not with our own strength, but with the God who has invited us into relationship.
We then pray the Lord’s Prayer, the prayer Jesus gave His disciples, reminding us that God is our Father, His kingdom is coming, and our lives are surrendered to His will.
The first small bead represents surrender:
“Into Your hands I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O LORD, faithful God.”— Psalm 31:5
Surrender is the foundation of prayer.
Before we bring God our requests, we first offer Him ourselves.
We place our worries, fears, dreams, and desires into His hands, trusting that He is faithful.
Union With Christ: The Anima Christi Prayer
The first large bead represents union with Christ.
At this point in the journey, we pray the Anima Christi — an ancient Christian prayer that draws our hearts toward Jesus and His saving work.
The words of this prayer invite us to meditate on Christ’s presence, His sacrifice, and our complete dependence on Him.
Anima Christi
Soul of Christ, sanctify me.
Body of Christ, save me.
Blood of Christ, inebriate me..
Water from Christ’s side, wash me.
Passion of Christ, strengthen me.
O good Jesus, hear me.
Within Your wounds hide me.
Suffer me not to be separated from You.
From the malignant one defend me.
At the hour of my death call me.
And bid me come to You, that with Your saints I may praise You forever and ever. Amen.
This prayer draws us into the mystery of Christ — His love, His mercy, His sacrifice, and His invitation to draw near to Him.
Loving God With All Our Heart
The second small bead reminds us of our first and greatest calling:
“I love You, LORD, my strength.”— Psalm 18:1
Prayer is not only about asking God for things. It is about loving God Himself.
Before we seek His hand, we seek His heart.
The Shepherd Who Leads and Restores
The second large bead brings us into one of Scripture’s most beloved passages — Psalm 23.
As we pray these words, we are reminded that God is not a distant observer of our lives. He is our Shepherd — the One who guides us, provides for us, restores us, comforts us, and walks with us through every season.
Pray the full passage of Psalm 23:
“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.”— Psalm 23:1
Allow the words of this Psalm to settle into your heart as you reflect on the Shepherd who leads you, restores your soul, walks with you through the valleys, prepares a table before you, and surrounds your life with His goodness and mercy.
The seven small beads that follow represent intercession.
Here we pray for seven people or areas of our lives, asking the Shepherd to guide, restore, comfort, provide, and bring hope.
Prayer turns our hearts outward as we carry others before God.
Cleansing and Receiving Mercy
The third large bead represents cleansing.
We take time to confess our sins before God. Then we pray:
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”— Psalm 51:10
Confession is not about shame. It is about restoration.
God does not reveal our brokenness to condemn us, but to heal us.
The seven small beads that follow represent mercy:
“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”
Pray this seven times, remembering our continual need for God’s grace and forgiveness.
We come not because we are perfect, but because Christ is faithful.
Revelation: Listening for the Voice of God
The fourth large bead represents revelation and listening.
God says:
“Call to Me and I will answer you, and tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.”— Jeremiah 33:3
Prayer is a conversation.
We speak to God, but we also make space to listen.

Thanksgiving: Remembering God’s Goodness
The fifth large bead represents thanksgiving.
Pray:
“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”— 1 Thessalonians 5:18
Pause.
Reflect on God’s goodness.
The seven small beads represent gratitude.
Give thanks for seven things today — remembering God’s faithfulness, provision, and kindness.
Resting in God’s Presence
The journey ends where it began — at the cross.
But now we do not simply surrender our burdens; we rest in the God who carries them.
Pray:
“For God alone my soul waits in silence;from Him comes my salvation.”— Psalm 62:1
Pause.
Rest in His presence.
Be still before Him.
Because the goal of prayer is not merely to complete a prayer routine.
The goal is to encounter God.
